A great 2 hour hike that ends in an unforgettable view of the sunrise over one of Norway's most picturesque fjords.

Backstory:

Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) has been on bucket list for as long as I can remember. When I decided to hit Norway during my semester abroad, Pulpit Rock was the first stop on our road trip. Luckily, the day before we departed for Pulpit Rock, a friend suggested we try to hike it to catch the sunrise - and that we did.

Getting There:

You can reach Pulpit Rock by car or by public transportation. As is the case when exploring Norway in general, I'd recommend renting a car - you'll save yourself a ton of time and headaches. Public transportation requires a ferry ride and a bus during main season (Apr. - Oct.), and a ferry ride, bus, and taxi during low season. Check out Visit Norway's page on the hike for more details (https://www.visitnorway.com/li...).

The Hike:

The hike begins from the parking lot. It's clearly marked by signs, but if you have trouble finding it, it is directly in front of the main entrance to Preikestolen Fjellstue (Lodge) - about 300m in front. You can also just ask the receptionist at the lodge (I'd use this as a last resort though, as the person we talked to repeatedly tried to deter us from attempting the hike).

Check what time the sunrises (depends on the season), and leave about 2-3 hours before. This gives you time to stop along the way for breaks or to take photos of the night sky (I got some great ones). The hike goes through the woods, a marsh, and a couple of rocky sections. Nothing too hard, just take extra care since you'll be hiking with limited light for most of the journey.

When you hit a few small lakes, you know you're within 5 minutes of reaching Preikestolen. After a brief stint on a rocky trail, Preikestolen and the fjord (Lysefjorden) will appear in front of you. If you could can go out onto Preikestolen, this is the best place to watch the sunrise directly over the fjord, but honestly the view will be amazing from anywhere. The sunrise is absolutely breathtaking. As the sun comes up over the top of the mountains it lights up the whole fjord. Take some pictures, and if you're feeling extra risky, dangle over the edge and get a shot or two (Sorry mom).

Cheers!

What I Wish I Knew:

  • Take a time lapse. I told a friend about the hike, and he took one when he went. It's phenomenal.
  • Bring gloves. Seriously. My hands got so cold I couldn't hit buttons on my camera.
  • If it gets crowded, hike to the viewpoint above Preikestolen (Not a clear path, just look around and climb up as you see fit). It gives a great view and more privacy.
