Cattle Canyon Trail has fantastic views of Mount Baldy and winds along several creeks and swimming holes, making it a refreshing hike to do. It is also now a part of the recently proclaimed San Gabriel Mountains National Monument.
Within the San Gabriel Mountains from Highway 39 and along East Fork Road is Cattle Canyon. To go through Cattle Canyon, you can access the trail head just south of the Bridge to Nowhere trail head along East Fork Road right after it intersects with Glendora Mountain Road. There is a small parking lot near the trail head and also across the bridge. Use caution and do not park along the road where there are no parking signs. Parking citations are given out on a regular basis to vehicles that ignore these signs. Make sure to also have your USFS Adventure Pass visible.
There are a couple large swimming holes near the beginning of the trail that you can enjoy. Unfortunately, in the beginning of the trail there are also graffiti among several rocks but the damage dissipates as you continue through the hike. The scenery is worth the view while getting away from the graffiti. All along the Cattle Canyon trail you will cross multiple creeks (around 15 of them) so be sure to wear waterproof hiking shoes, especially if the water is flowing high above the stepping stones across each river. The rivers are fun to wade through, especially during the summer months where they provide some relief from the heat and lack of shade.
From multiple parts of the trail, you will have great views of Mount Baldy and you will also enter Cattle Canyon. The end of the hike will be noticeable when you reach a gate. At the gate you will see the privately owned Thompson Ranch and the Curtis Tungsten Mine nearby it (the last tungsten mine commercially operating in North America).
