The Cold Spring Trail is a great opportunity to explore the rumples and folds of the Santa Ynez mountains, and rewards hikers with a spectacular view of Santa Barbara from Montecito Peak.
Park in the lot east of where Cold spring creek intersects Mountain Road. The correct trailhead is the one with the wooden sign, do not take the trail with a rusty metal sign. Begin your ascent and at the first fork stay right on East Fork. You will cross two mild creeks before the next fork, again, stay right. At the next fork turn right.
Forks:
Fork 1: Turn right and cross two mild creeks.
Fork 2: Turn right.
Fork 3: Turn right.
Fork 4: Turn left.
Fork 5:Turn left
After the fifth fork you will reach a road, turn left onto it. This section is sunny and hot so be prepared. Continue along the trail until you see a zig-zagging trail to the left. If you don't take it you'll run into private property and have to turn around. You will come to a fork, turn left. Then you must exit the trail to the right. You'll make a steep uphill ascent for about 50 ft. You'll arrive at the Saddle and be able to see the peak from here. When the trail splits again you can take either one to the peak. Enjoy the splendor of the view of the land, city, and sea.
