A super mellow, casual hike with amazing views of the Dana Point harbor.
First, you'll be parking in the parking lot for the dog park. It's free parking and there are roughly 40 spaces, so there is plenty of parking. I've never seen more than 20 cars here at any one time. Once parked you'll find the trail head/ start on the northwest side of the lot (opposite the dog park and the view from the second photo).
Once you go about 50yds, you'll see a tunnel on your right (fourth photo) that leads you under Golden Lantern St...go right and cross through the tunnel. You'll now be going back up the same way you came down, just on the other side of the street.
From here the trail is pretty straight forward with a few different paths you can take. The 2.1mi trail that I did, had me go to the top of the hill to see the views of the harbor and almost all of Dana Point. You definitely don't have to do it this way, since there are about 7 or 8 different ways you can go. All of them lead you back to the trailhead and down to the tunnel to head back to your car.
These trails are shared with mountain bikers, so pay attention, but again, I've never seen more than 3 people on all the trails at any one time. It's very isolated and very awesome. Especially for dog owners since there are miles of trails to train and walk your dog without any others in sight. Make sure to bring plenty of doggie bags and pack out what you brought in, or even better, pick up any trash you see and leave it better than you found it!
