Description

Davis Mountains State Park is small in size, but grand in views. It's one of the few ways to experience this sky island, which is mostly on privately owned land.

The majority of the Davis Mountains are privately owned, but the state park is one of the few ways to access it. These mountains are surrounded by the Chihuahuan Desert and is one of three sky islands in Texas. There are many rare plants and species in the Davis Mountains that exist nowhere else. The closest town is Fort Davis, TX, which is home to the Fort Davis National Historic Site.

The Davis Mountains State Park Loop trail tacks along side the mountainside with some steep climbs, about a 900ft vertical climb, and spectacular views. It's is comprised of the Old CCC Trail and the Skyline Drive Trail. The Old CC Trail eventually deadends to the Skyline Drive Trail where you would take a right.

It only takes a couple of hours. There are more trails on the other side of the highway, but it was closed due to javelina hunting season.

Dogs are welcome on the trail (on leash) and in the campgrounds. You can also ride your mountain bike on the trail but mostly for experienced riders.

There is camping available in the park as well as the Indian Lodge, a full-service historic hotel and restaurant built in the 30's known for its beautiful adobe walls.

The McDonald Observatory is only a 30 minute drive from the State Park, which hosts Star Parties on certain days.

Reviews

Was there this past May. Did hike a section of the trail. Stayed at the Indian Lodge which was very comfortable. There are great views in this State Park. Hope to go back some day.

Beautiful area, with great scenery, wildlife and photo ops.
