Description

This moderate hike in Del Valle Regional Park will provide hikers with views of the Del Valle Reservoir and the surrounding East Bay hills.
This hike is best done during the spring, fall, or winter when moderate temperatures make the hike more comfortable.
Be warned that this hike has a large elevation change despite being less than 4 miles.
Starting at the Arroyo Road Staging Area, take the East Shore Trail east, heading towards a steep ridge line. At first, the trail will dip downhill and hikers will cross a bridge over the Arroyo Valle creek, which drains the Del Valle Reservoir. Riparian woodlands surround the creek and will often be filled with the sounds of chirping songbirds. The hike then begins the 450 foot climb to the top of the ridge on a wide fire trail. Eventually, near the top, hikers will be rewarded with views of the valley and the Del Valle Reservoir. At the bench, turn right onto the Heron Bay Trail, which drops down close to the water level and travels through interspersed patches of trees. Once you reach the fence near the bottom of the hill, stay to the left to remain on the same trail. This trail remains relatively flat, following the contours of the hill above and the reservoir below. After about 0.8 miles, the Heron Bay Trail will meet up with the East Shore Trail. Turn left and begin the gradual climb to the top of the ridge line once again. Remain on the East Shore Trail going downhill to return to your parked car.
