Moderately easy day hike with awesome views and a shady lunch spot.

Just off highway 62 lies an easy 1/2 day hike with incredible views of the Morongo Valley. Though technically part of the park, the out-of-the-way-ness of the hike means you don't need to pay the $20 National Park fee. Parking is ample, and there's a pit toilet at the trailhead (beware of bees and yellow jackets!)

The hike begins by climbing up to the ridge bordering Joshua National Park. It's a 500-foot climb that will get your blood pumping. Rock stairs guide much of the trail, and be sure to look up as well as down! We stumbled upon some majestic bighorn sheep during our hike up. The top has spectacular views of Morongo Valley including 29 Palms and the town of Joshua Tree.Zig-zag across the slope and begin your drop into the canyon. You'll be able to see your destination after about a mile - a stand of luscious palms tucked against the North side of the Canyon. Though the actual site can get crowded, there's plenty of boulders and plenty of shade to find a good lunch spot.

There and back again took us around 2 hours (with lunch and photos). It's a good hike for kids, but pets are not allowed, even on a leash. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

Reviews

fun trail, incline was steep but it wasn't too long and a nice spot at the end.

This is a great, moderate hike with no coverage that rewards you with a literal oasis in the desert. Pack a snack or a lunch and veg out under the palms while you soak in the views, the coolness and the sounds of the bugs and birds. It’s a thrill. If you’re headed to Joshua Tree, put this place on your list. It’s just a few miles outside the park - no park fee!

It was breathtaking to hike up and over the ridge and see such a vibrant patch of life spring from the rocks. If you've never experienced the magic of a real-life oasis, this is a must-see for any visitor to the park. Even the air feels and smells differently once you're inside the trees. Allow an extra hour to sit and linger.
