A beautiful, challenging hike to a nearby peak, offering breathtaking views.Excellent chances of seeing wildlife.Almost guaranteed solitude.

The trailhead is accessed at the Hogback Homestead. [GPS Info. (Latitude, Longitude):46.41056, -113.7019446°24'38"N, 113°42'7"W]

Due to the isolated location of this trailhead, and the miles of rough dirt road that it takes to get there, you will more than likely have the place to yourself. Park in the dirt area by the fence in front of the homestead. There is a sign off to your left that marks the beginning of the Hogback Trail. The path gets steep right from the start. It winds its way up the ridge line, taking you through wide meadows with incredible views of the valley and mountains, and through thick, dark, cool forests.

Your chances of seeing wildlife while on this trail are good. Be sure to keep your bear spray handy and make plenty of noise while hiking to avoid any unexpected run-ins with Grizzly or black bears. Mountain goats, bighorn sheep, moose, and deer frequent this area. If you are lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a herd of elk.

The trail ends at the top of a peak. Here, you will want to have your camera ready to capture the breathtaking views. This would also be a great place for you to enjoy a well-earned snack.

This hike takes a few hours. It can definitely be done in one day. Be sure to bring multiple layers of clothing, and prepare for weather ranging from scorching hot sun-breaks to out of the blue snow fall. Montana weather is unpredictable, so be ready for whatever it sends your way.
