Hike the Honey Creeper Trail in Los Tres Brazos

The Honey Creeper Trail, named after the rare Honey Creeper bird that can be found there, is the "base camp" trail of the Kalu Yala community. It is a loop that starts in their town square, heads up the nearest hill, taking you immediately into the depths of the jungle, and quickly has you back into the main camp and around again to town square. 

As a loop, you can do this trial either way, but I'll explain it starting going west. From town square, you take the main path past the student housing. You will see a sign for the Honey Creeper trail and it skirts into the trees but says uphill from the drop down to the Pacora River. The path stays along the Pacora River for about 200 meters before venturing into the jungle. Soon after, you will come across a little platform and hang out spot made out of jungle wood. It's a great spot to bring a book or a friend for some conversation. Continuing on, you will follow the trail, going up and down a few different hills. When you hit the T in the trail, go to the left, uphill. Here there is a sign directing you, either up to the summit, down to town square (where you came from) or to the right towards camp. Your left turn will take you up for another 10 or so minutes, before reaching another T. My suggestion here is to go right first, where it spits you out to a lookout just after crossing under a barbed wire fence. Then, return to the T and go straight (or a left from the original direction) taking you to the summit of Honey Creeper. 

Another fun option for this trail is to follow the tributary down to the Pacora River on you are on the last stretch to the summit. If you want to take this route, have a Kalu Yalan go with you, as its much harder to find as it isn't marked and the trail is quick to be eaten back by the jungle. 

From the summit, you take the same trail back to the higher T in the trail, going downhill and continue until the lower T. Here you can finish the loop by going down to Camp or go right back where you came from and head directly back to town square. The loop is suggested, but both are nice.

Keep on the lookout for tons of great wildlife on this quick little route. From tiny bugs to full size ocelots, you can always find excitement out here on this little home trek. Take advantage of the biological hotspot you are in and enjoy.
