Description

Explore beautiful ice caves practically by yourself and hike on the ice of Lake Superior -- the largest lake in the world!
Begin at Meyer's Beach in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore near Cornucopia, WI. There is a parking lot, but get there early in the day to get a spot and make sure to use the bathroom before heading out. There is no opportunity on the ice.
Head out onto the frozen lake and follow the shoreline east about a half a mile to the first caves. The caves, arches, and ice formations extend a mile along the shoreline.
You can probably explore the entire area in a couple hours if you're quick, but pack a lunch, spend the day, and take your time climbing through ice passageways, sliding down frozen waterfalls, and looking at ice extending to the horizon.

Easily the best winter adventure I've ever done. Yak tracks make it all the more incredible as you can get into the most slippery of places :)

One of my favorite places - the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. I agree, definitely get there early -- or you won't feel as though you're exploring alone. The amount of visitors has skyrocketed the past two years the caves have been open. Worth the drive every time!
