Description

Added by John Maurizi

This trail travels through a lava field and past several lava tubes. A unique feature in a desert surrounded by sandstone mountains.

From the parking area, the trail travel west directly into the lava field.  This is evident by the sharp black rocks the trail travels through.  Watch for the first lava tube on the left.  All lava tubes have a steep short descent down in to explore a bit but the tubes are not deep and could be dangerous because of the sharp rocks.

After a steep petrified dune view point on the left, the trail leaves the lava field and descends toward a dry wash about one mile away from this view point.  The trail ends when it reaches West Canyon Road.  Return the way you came.

Reviews

I have hiked the lava tubes over 10 times. There are two main caves, a big open one and a narrowing winding tube. A short hike to the caves and well worth it!
