Great Sand Dunes National Park is a must visit. And it is also one of the few dog friendly Parks, so take your pooch with you as you hike the beautiful Mosca Pass Trail.
The Mosca Pass trail is an (approx) 6.5 mile out and back hike that takes you through beautiful ponderosa and aspen forests to summit 1500 above the start. The trailhead parking is the first left after the Great Sand Dunes visitor center. It is a moderate hike, but allow for several hours, as the wildflowers are fantastic and there are several scenic views. The trail follows a beautiful babbling creek the whole way. Dogs are allowed on this trail which is quite rare in a National Park. Please be respectful and pick up after your pet and you are required to keep them on a 6' leash. You may encounter wildlife as well, so be prepared. Bear spray may be necessary, but you are more likely to see some big horn sheep on the cliffs above you than run into a predator. This trail is a great workout if you keep a steady pace, and your reward when finished can be a dip in Medano Creek!

Reviews
This is a really nice trail that runs next to a creek. Lots of shade, running water and a gradual incline. We didn't have enough time to do all of it but loved the first mile or so that we did do. Just lovely.
