If you’re looking for a solid day/weekend hike near Middle Tennessee with a truly remote and rugged feel, the North Rim and North Plateau trails at Savage Gulf are the answer. Savage Gulf is a 11,500-acre natural area on the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau with approximately 50 miles of hiking trails that lead to scenic views, deep gorges, waterfalls, and historical locations.
From the Savage Ranger Station, take the Savage Day Loop for roughly 2.2 miles until you reach the junction. From there take the North Plateau trail and return on the North Rim trail. The elevation gain on this trail is rather gradual and and subtle, but it is a long trek that requires endurance and time. To complete this hike in a day, start early and give yourself plenty of time. If you're inclined to make it an overnight trip, there are places to camp along the trail. Overall, this is a great hike that isn't heavily trafficked. It features dense forests, suspended bridges, and gorge overlooks, If you're looking for some southern solitude, this is the hike for you.
