Description

Added by John Maurizi

This loop hike offers some great views on the Hudson River and Hudson Highlands State Park across the river.

There is three different trailheads to access the North Point Loop.  I chose the trailhead that would give me the longest hike.  That would be the Butter Hill parking area on Route 9W north.  From the parking lot, start on the connector trail designated with white markers.  Follow this for about .5 miles until the trail ends on the Howell Trail.

Turn right on the Howell Trail designated with blue markers.  This section is very steep as you descend Storm King Mountain.  After about 3/4 of a mile and crossing two streams, you will reach the Stillman Spring Trail (white markers).  Turn left here off the Howell Trail.  The Stillman Spring Trail is a wide fire road and continues to descend all the way to route 218 in another 3/4 of a mile.  The trail ends and exits onto Route 218.  Walk to the right for about 50 feet and you will see the start of the Howell Trail (blue markers) that you were on earlier.

Start up the Howell Trail.  It is all uphill and steep.  You will reach the first view point after .5 miles.  There are many view points of the Hudson River along the way for the next 1.5 miles until you reach the top of North Point.  Continue along the Howell Trail until you loop back to the Stillman Spring Trail and return back up Storm King Mountain, turning left on the white connector trail and back you the parking lot.
