Description

Added by John Maurizi

This easy loop hike follows a carriage road around one of the most popular rock climbing locations in the United States. Known as the "Trapps" section of the "Gunks," The trail is often used for access to rock climbing and popular with trail runners.

From the West Trapps parking lot ($15 for hikers), walk to the end of the parking lot and past a large kiosk.  The trail connects the parking lot to the Overcliff Road/Undercliff Road junction.  The loop can be done in either direction.  I turned left on the Overcliff Road.  This takes you behind the ridge and away from the cliffs.  Follow this Carriage road for 2.5 miles until is descends to a junction with the Undercliff Road.

Turn right on Undercliff Road.  This far end is secluded much like the Overcliff Road.  After about one mile you will reach the popular section of the Gunks for rock climbing and bouldering.  In the summer this area is fairly busy with rock climbers.  As you near the end, the carriage road is right at the base of the cliffs with many people climbing.

This is a very easy walk, great in the fall and winter if you want to escape the crowds of the summer.
