From horse trekking, mountain biking, hiking, swimming, camping and more... Salmon River State Forest/Day Pond State Park is a fantastic recreational area during every season! This hikes features forest area, historic landmarks, scenic outlooks, and a spur to Day Pond Brook Falls.
There are many ways to do this trail (following the blue blaze and blue/red blaze for spur to waterfall):
- From the Day Pond (Google Day Pond in Colchester and there will be brown signs that will direct you towards the Day Pond Parking Lot when you get close,)
- Do the loop, 5.4 miles
- Out & Back to the falls (Northern Loop), ~ 4 miles
- Loop + Out & Back to Old Comstock Bridge, 7.4 miles
- From the Old Comstock Bridge (Google Old Comstock Bridge in Colchester. You'll pull into Bridge St. where you're basically parking in a neighborhood right next to the bridge over Salmon River. The neighbors were very nice the first time I went and gave directions!)
- Out & Back to the falls (Northern Loop), ~ 6 miles
- Loop + Out & Back to Old Comstock Bridge, 7.4 miles
Your options mainly depends on your time! I appreciate the extra hike from the Old Comstock Bridge for it's historic values, scenic outlook over the river, and elevation gain so I usually go from the bridge end.
During the fall season, Day Pond Brook Falls usually tends to be dry, but nevertheless, still gorgeous! It's a really interesting trail with lots to experience.
And because maps are awesome, here is a detailed trail map!
Enjoy the hike and tell me all about it!
P.S. I threw in rock climbing in the activities sections for bouldering. During the Southern Loop, there is a massive boulder I found to be pretty good for all those interested. It may be pretty far in to carry a mat, but for those who are interested and still like to play around, this is a little reminder :)
P.P.S. In case some people are really into the elevation gain, I am unsure on it as I have never recorded my own. Looking at many other recordings, it ranges from 600-1000 feet.
