The upper dells of Matthiessen State park is an absolute treat for all ages and skill levels. Loop trail with stepping stones and perfectly placed stairs.

From the start of the parking lot you will cross a picnic area to your left where you can have a bite to eat before or after your hike. The trailhead starts off with a couple flights of stair leading you down to the bridge. After taking in the spectacular views at the top of the waterfall you will cross the bridge and turn right to go down, taking the stairs to the upper dells. Depending on when you decide to visit the water levels vary. During the summer months the water level is fairly low because the heat. After a couple days of rain would be best time to visit. This trail is a 2.2 mile loop and can be enjoyed with your family a friends.

The Upper Dells are very simple to hike. Wet feet are the only problems you'll encounter, but there are so many cool little canyon systems within the area, lots to check out!

Most people do not know about this place because it is right across the road from Starved Rock. If you are planning on hiking starved rock, take a little time out of the day to explore Matthiessen. It is worth the time, TRUST ME!. It is a very short hike but is very cool. Fortunately, I visited when there were and handful amount of people at the waterfall.
