Lady Bird Johnson Grove is a short, level hike takes you through a towering redwood grove and is close to the Kuchel Visitor Center. Due to its elevation, this grove sees more fog than the nearby lowland groves adding to the already peaceful redwood experience.

This hike starts in the parking lot of the Lady Bird Johnson Grove Picnic Area. As one of the more popular hikes in Redwood National Park, it is a good idea to get there early to secure parking and miss the crowds.

To get to the parking lot from the Kuchel Visitor Center, travel north on Highway 101 from the center and turn on Bald Hills Rd just passed the town of Orick. After a few miles, you will drive under a footbridge. The parking lot is immediately after this bridge.

After taking the bridge across Bald Hills Rd, you will find yourself on the first part of the trail. The trail will gradually descend through a lush forest scattered with a few large trees. After about 0.3 miles, you will reach an intersection where the loop portion of the trail begins. The loop is generally where the biggest trees are located. The trail continues for another 0.3 miles until its intersection with the Berry Glen Trail which leads back down to the 101. The Grove trail then meanders back up through the grove for another 0.5 miles. At this point you should be at the first intersection and its only a short jaunt back to your car.

Reviews

Easy trail and a good introduction to the Redwoods. I thought Stout Grove was a bit better but any chance to take a peaceful stroll through these giants is worthwhile. If you’re looking for an even more serene walk with fewer visitors I’d suggest the James Irvine trail out of Prairie Creek, either as an out and back or make a long loop via Miner’s Ridge.

This is a sweet little loop if you're looking for a nice taste of Redwood National Park. It's conveniently located just a few miles off the 101, so it's great if you're just passing through. The wooden bridge is a sight to see in itself, let alone the stunning trees beyond it. If you're looking for the tallest trees in the world, though, check out Tall Trees Grove, which isn't too far from here. You'll need a permit from the Visitor Center. Oh, and don't forget! Bring your rain jacket!
