Hike to Baker Peak, Great Basin National Park

Clustered in arguably Nevada's highest mountain group, Baker Peak is the state 4th highest peak, right behind the neighboring Jeff Davis and Wheeler Peaks. Because Baker is slightly overshadowed by its neighbors, it sees very little traffic. Baker Peak is rugged, wild, and requires a long approach. For determined hikers and peak baggers, there is no better hike to see all of what Great Basin National Park has to offer. 

To climb the peak, begin at the Baker Lake Trailhead. There is ample parking here and restrooms. The trail to Baker Lake is 5 miles one way and is excellently graded and maintained. The hike to the lake is fast and full of beautiful forest scenery. Take in the views and look for wildlife, huge deer and turkey abound. 

Once you reach Baker Lake, the off trail journey begins. Simply turn right (north) and head up the obvious gully leading to a saddle. Do not be distracted by a peak to the East, for it is a sister peak of Baker and is not the true summit. Head to the saddle, and take in the first view of Baker Peak. It is not far. Continue hiking on talus to reach the peak .

From the peak, the views are unmatched. The cirque below the peak is extremely rugged, which is typical of Great Basin peaks. Wheeler and Jeff Davis peaks loom under half a mile to the North, while the rest of the Snake Range sprawls out to the south. You can see for hundreds of miles from this peak, due to the surrounding lowlands of the West Desert. 

To return, simply retrace your steps. While hiking this peak, it is important to be self sufficient. Do not plan to see any people, especially once you break off the trail.
