If you're looking for a big mountain view, this is a great place to start!
Cedar Cliff Rock is one of those local places that exemplifies the Blue Ridge mountains oh-so-well. From the top you can see the Tuckaseegee River along with both Cedar Cliff and Bear Creek Reservoirs. While there are a few homes in between, much of the view is untouched, allowing a big mountain view with easy access.
On your drive to Cedar Cliff Mountain you will be able to see the rock face from the road. That landmark indicates you are close to the trailhead. There are no designated parking spots but there are a few small places for several cars to easily park along side the road. There is only one sign marked "Cedar Cliff Mountain" with an arrow pointing up what appears like a boulder route. This is not the trailhead. The trailhead actually begins behind a large "A" framed gate that sits slightly up the hill on what appears to be the start of an old logging road. While the trail is unmarked, it is quite obvious where the trail leads.
This is one of those hikes that when you're going up, you're really going up and same for downhill. It's a pretty big pull up the mountain from the road, with an intense straight-up section about half way through. Once you are nearly at the top of that straight-up section, the trail turns to the left to follow the ridge line up. There are a few smaller trails/ old logging roads that branch off but as long as you stay on the trail most worn, you shouldn't have a problem. The trail then wraps around the mountain towards the rock face. A final, small, uphill section will put you on the very top, allowing you to explore the rock face or put up a hammock in the trees on the ridge!
NOTES:
Exposed rock faces can be dangerous!!! Hopefully that doesn't come as a surprise to anyone but if you are aware of what you're doing, they can be a blast! There is plenty of room to sit and enjoy the view or walk around and snap some pictures, just be cautious of where you're stepping! (I also wouldn't suggest being up there in the middle of a thunder storm)
There are several awesome places to hang a hammock at the top or have a picnic! It's a great sunset hike but if you have time, stay longer!
Pack out what you pack in...and then some! Lets help keep this place as beautiful as we found it! Just make sure whatever trash you bring in you take out with you. And then also any you find along your hike!
The view is way worth the challenging hike up so don't let the challenge stop you from doing it!
