Hike with incredibly scenic views of the Tetons, Jackson Hole Valley, and Phelps Lake. This is a short hike with huge rewards.
Getting There:
Coming from Jackson Hole, enter Grand Teton National Park and turn left onto Moose-Wilson Road. Continue southwest until you come to Death Canyon trailhead on your right. There is a large parking lot beside the trailhead, as well as bathrooms and picnic areas.
The Trail:
The six+ mile out-and-back trail begins at the Death Canyon trailhead. You'll start on a one mile hike on a well-maintained dirt trail through scenic views of the Tetons, which will lead you to the Phelps Lake Overlook with views of the lake as well as Jackson Hole Valley. There you will begin your one-mile descent to Phelps Lake. The entire hike gains only about 500 feet of elevation.
Feel like exploring more? Meander along the trails that take you down and around the lake; the one leading off to the right will take you up and away from the lake before heading back to the shore. You'll find a great spot called Huckleberry Point where you can partake in some cliff jumping. Feel free to throw a fishing line in the water anywhere around the lake as well.
As usual when in the wilderness and around any wildlife, keep a safe distance and do not approach anything you might see. Bears and elk are two animals that are well known in this area, so keep an eye out!
