If you are first-time visitor to Isle Royale National Park or are just going for 1 night, consider this day hike to Huginnin Cove. There are great views, chances of seeing moose, and flexibility for camping.
Huginnin Cove is located on the west side of the island close to Windigo and is a great day hike. Many people feel it's an even better overnight trip.
If you're going to be spending the night on the island, you must first go through the orientation with park staff and then get your permit. There are many campgrounds to choose from and this completely depends on how much time you have. For a 1-night visit, consider setting up camp at nearby Washington Creek. Setting up here offers the opportunity to lose some weight for this day hike and camping at Washington Creek gives you closer proximity to the park visitor center, store, facilities, and boat dock.
Once your camp is set, begin the trail by heading west from Windigo on the Minong Ridge Trail. You'll quickly corss Washington Creek and the trail then splits. From here, the western route gets you to the cove in 3.1 miles and the eastern route gets you there in 3.3 miles. Pick either direction and come back on the opposite trail to make it a loop.
On the east route, you'll encounter Wendigo Mines. There are still remnants and ruins of cabins and boarding houses from the operation.
No matter which direction you take, you'll find trails that are constantly changing. There are great views and then overgrown sections so thick you can't see your feet. There are rocky sections and marshy sections. Uphill and downhill. The trail definitely keeps you on your toes. Then there's the always-constant possibility of seeing moose. Be quiet and occasionally stop to listen. They'll see/hear you before you see them and will probably be still if you're approaching.
Once you get to Huginnin Cove, you'll see rocky cliffs and cobble beaches. If it's clear, you'll get views of Canada.
