Little Zigzag Falls is one of Oregon's hidden gems and the easy trail makes it a good hike for the whole family.

The hike along Little Zig Zag River is definitely one of Oregon's hidden gems. Although the waterfall isn't as highly rated in comparison to other impressive falls like Multnomah Falls, Abiqua Falls, or Bridal Viel Falls, it is still quite the sight to see, and most definitely worth the visit.

The short 1/3rd of a mile hike along the Little Zig Zag River starts at an easy to access parking lot at the end of Kiwanis Camp Road. Near the begining of the trail there is a single picnic table available if you an interested in bringing along a picnic or want somewhere to sit and eat lunch.

The trail winds alongside the river, which offers many great photography opporunities up to the falls. At the end of the trail, the forest opens up into a little wooded clearing, where the falls can be viewed from several vantage points. There is a pleasant wooden bench directly to the side of the falls, which is a great place to take in the view. There is also a small trail that leads up to the top of the falls, but it doesn't give the most photographable angles.

Depending upon the time of year you visit, it is realtively easy to cross the small river, which gives a few better angles for taking photos of the falls. The best angle is straight at the falls from a little outlet 10-15ft down river. Although the area is fairly shaded, it is still recomended to visit the falls in the early morning, to get softer light. Also, be sure to bring a lens cloth, as there is a lot of spray off the falls!

Getting there: From the town of Rhododendron, continue on Highway 26 east towards Government Camp for 4.3 miles and turn left onto Kiwanis Camp Road. Continue on Kiwanis Camp Road till it ends in a parking lot area next to an old bridge crossing Little Zig Zag River. Park and walk the 1/3rd of a mile trail to the falls, which starts next to the bridge.

Reviews

I camped nearby and drove to this hike early - had my breakfast at said picnic table and tagged this little hike onto another nearby. Only one other couple there that morning, which was a dream!

Hiked here last night just before sunset, awesome place. Only saw two people there. Go during the week.
