A short 1 hour hike brings you to the Hot River at Reykjadalur. Swim in geothermal waters while soaking in the incredible views that Iceland has to offer.

The trailhead to start your journey to the Reykjadalur hot river is located at the Hot River cafe near the town of Hveragerði. A large parking lot is available, and the option to grab a coffee or snack at the cafe before heading out. The trail is wide and very easy to follow with a steady incline the entire way, the trip is a short 3.88 km and only takes an hour to an hour and a half one way. At about three quarters of the way there you will be able to see the river, stay to the left side as you continue to hike. Option to hop in for a swim at this point, although the water is not very warm. Throughout the hike you will see several geothermal water holes (it is not advised to touch the water as it can reaching boiling temperatures) and amazing views the entire way. Where most people swim at the end of this hike, there are wooden docks and semi-private changing stalls. Option to camp out on the side of the river to enjoy a sunset or sunrise soak. The farther up stream, the hotter the water temperature gets, so there is a sweet spot for anyone's preference. The trail can get busy, however if you start by 7:30 am you may be one of the first to reach the river. The water is clear and perfect for relaxing in after the hike up there, definitely a great way to experience Iceland's geothermal wonders.

Really windy but absolutely worth it. They have places to change but it’s very open.

These springs are a great place to swim after the hike in. The way in is scenic and the actual pools have areas to change and walk all around to make it more convenient

The area is beautiful and I am giving 5 stars even though our experience was more challenging. We planned this for the first day of our trip and arrived on a rainy day at the end of August. We thought the hike would be chilly, but worth it for the hot soak after our overnight flight. It had apparently been raining for days and the river was running cold. So, after a cold wet hike in the pouring rain we jumped into the cold to occasionally tepid stream. This was then followed by an even colder hike out. It was not the start to our trip we envisioned, but it was an adventure!

When I started the hike I did not realize how long it would take me, as it is mostly uphill. However, the pay off of the springs is totally worth it and I can't wait to do it again!

This was a really cool place. I enjoyed the hike up because it kept it very secluded and less crowded. I wish it had a little better changing area. You're definitely still exposed in what they have now, but then again I guess who cares, you're in Iceland!

Well worth the trip. Really great views and a reward once you arrive and get to relax in the river. Bonus that we went on a day that wasn't that busy.

Was beautiful and fairly easy. Water was pretty hot but we got in near the entrance

Really enjoyed the walk up however we reached the lot at 11am just as a few minibuses and a coach full of a school trip arrived - filling the trail with people! When we reached the river there was still space but you would be sharing your patch of river with others. Also be aware the changing areas are 'semi stalls' open on two sides. There are also sheep roaming the area who come over to see whats going on! Overall a great experience - thanks for letting us know about it!
