Hike to this beautiful and secluded mountain lake, surrounded by snowy peaks in the Winds. Skinny dipping is mostly optional.

Shirley lake is a beautiful and not heavily traveled area in the Winds. To get there, you start at the Green River Lakes trailhead (8,000 ft) and head out on the Western shore of the lower lake. You can shave off three miles by canoeing to the end of the lake, if you like. But I prefer the hike.

The Western side of the lake is gorgeous, mostly deep timber with babbling streams and creeks. It is three miles of easy hiking.

Once you reach the Porcupine Pass trail at the South end of the lake, veer right toward Porcupine Pass. You will then cross Porcupine Creek and begin long stretch of switchbacks. After a grueling uphill, the trail crosses Porcupine Creek again. You can refill your water and rest here.

This is where the trail splits again. Follow the signs to the right up to Twin Lakes. You cross a gorgeous meadow, and then begin a difficult ascent again. The trail become faint in some spots so be aware!

Once you reach Twin Lakes, the trail continues through and splits right down the middle of the lakes. Rock hopping or river sandals needed here.

Follow the trail uphill just for about another half mile, and you arrive at beautiful Shirley Lake (10,000 ft). At this point, especially int the Summer, you may want to take a dip to escape the heat, sweat from the hike, and mosquitos!

All in all, give yourself at least 5 hours, depending upon your skill level, hiking speed, and desired time at the top.

As always, be bear aware, and leave no trace! Leave this place in the condition you found it, so others can enjoy and appreciate for years and years to come.
