Description

Experience the exposure of the Grand Canyon’s edge at Shoshone Point along the south rim of the canyon inside Grand Canyon National Park.

A two mile round trip and relatively fast hike, Shoshone Point lies only about a mile from the parking lot and is an easy hike along a dirt road to a stunning vista. The trailhead is on Desert View Dr (Highway 64) about 3.5 miles east of the junction of highways 180 and 64. Look for the trail on the north side of the road as you drive east on Desert View Dr and you will see a parking area with room for 5 or 6 cars, and a gate that blocks the dirt road.

Follow the dirt road for about a mile until you will see a pavilion that is available as an event space, permits required. While there are no restrooms at the trailhead, there are at this location. Continue on a small and narrow (exposed) trail out onto a small rock outcropping where you are surrounded on three sides by dramatic exposure and breathtaking views on the Grand Canyon. Walk out to the edge for those who are not afraid of heights!

This hike is also available as a snow shoe hike in the winter.

As every where else in the national park, dogs are only allowed on paved walkways, not trails. Please be aware and respectful of these regulations and as always, leave no trace.

This is an easy hike that takes you to some amazing canyon views. My favorite time to look over the canyon is during the sunset

Loved this hike! Hike is easy and so was parking. It was not too crowded either! Would be a great place for a sunrise!!

This was a pleasant surprise for my wife and I. Getting a piece of the Grand Canyon to ourselves in the busy season.

We did this hike at sunrise and it was the best. A lot less tourists than later in the day, and seeing the canyon slowly fill with light was breathtaking.
