With a 360 degree view of the surrounding ocean and countryside, a hike up Mount Maunganui is a perfect activity for a beautiful day or to get in some exercise.
Mount Maunganui sits right on the water in the Bay of Plenty. Half the island rests on the open ocean, where the other half rises out of the bay. Driving in to the town, it's impossible not to see this massive piece of land jutting above the flat town and ocean around it.
Once you have found parking, which might take awhile, the trail starts at the end of the beach walkway along the sand. There are a couple different routes up to the summit of the mountain, one being a 4WD track and the other being a more technical and direct route with steep stairs pretty much the entire way up. The lush green grass, grazing sheep, unreal views of the ocean, and wild flowers peppering the hills make the hike quite enjoyable, though you will be huffing and puffing a decent amount.
Round trip, with a good break at the top of course, should only take you about 2 hours. Though we did this hike close to midday, I would imagine both sunset and sunrise from the top of the mountain would make it all the more sweet. Enjoy!

The walk to the top can be as challenging as you like, but worth it. In summer take water and sun block. Great views on assent, and great views at the top.

A short but sweet hike up to the top, with great views of the bay. It was relatively busy but there are several routes up and plenty of room at the top with some benches

I hiked up this for the sunrise with a backpacker in my hostel and it was absolutely worth waking up for. We took the 4WD track up (which I think may be an easier way up if you like a steady climb without stairs) and then the Oruahine Track down. We had the most epic view as the sun was rising and rain clouds were right behind us with a rainbow on its tail. From the top watch as all the sheep run around on the base of the track too. The walk down with the stairs was really chill and so beautiful. As Grant said, bring your togs! I regret not bring them for a cool down swim after!

"The Mount" is such a great little beach town and this hike will give you amazing views (as these photos show). Bring your swimsuit (in the summer) and take a dip in the water on the way down.
