Although Trillium Falls is small, it has a beautiful cascade to it. There is not much light at the falls so if you want to take photos, a tripod is recommended.
Trillium Falls trail is a nice little hike through a second growth and old growth redwood forest. The trail is lined with sweet smelling ferns and has plenty of shade the entire route. This would be good for a midday hike in summer.
The trail starts from the Elk Meadows Day Use parking area. Start from behind the restrooms and walk down the paved bike path. Soon you will see a sign directing you to Trillium Falls Trail. The trail is well maintained but not marked except for an occasional wood post with an arrow pointing the direction.
The trail is a little less than 3 miles and has an elevation gain of just over 500 feet. I hiked this in late afternoon and didn't see a single person. The highlight of this hike was the solitude and the small Trillium Falls. The falls are set in a cove of sorts with a bridge directly in front to observe the falls or take pictures. Another highlight, if you're lucky, is a seeing a herd of Roosevelt Elk grazing in the field right by the parking area. Best viewing times are early morning and late afternoon/dusk.
An enjoyable hike I would do again.
