Description

Added by Joe Whitson

Buck Hill is the highest point in Theodore Roosevelt National Park and although it isn't that high, the comparative flatness of the surrounding area means you'll get breathtaking views of the surrounding North Dakota prairie and badlands. It's also a good place to view the park's wildlife like bison and wild horses.

Buck Hill is a popular stop on Theodore Roosevelt National Park's Scenic Loop Road. The official trail is only a half mile round trip, but the landscape is open and it is worth spending more time in the Buck Hill area wandering around the various hills and lookouts, patching together a 360 degree view of the surrounding park. The south hill will reveal the badlands in all their alien glory and the north hill will provide a gentler prairie landscape. Be careful if you tread off trail, however, as you don't want to stumble upon a rattlesnake or trip into a prickly pear cactus!
