Ice Climbing at Balfour Wall

Improvement District No. 9, Alberta

Description

Added by Matt Ford

Enjoy beautiful views of some of the best peaks on the Icefields Parkway all while swinging into some quality ice. Duration: 1 day. Elevation gain: 300 metres. Distance: 1500 metres.

Drive up the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93N) for 60 km. From there you will see a small rest stop like parking lot. From there the trail is quite obvious.

The trail is short, but very steep. It shouldn't take more than 45 minutes to arrive at the climb. Once there enjoy the beautiful views and varied ice. There are a few mixed climbs and a few pure ice climbs.

This road isn't a priority for maintenance so if it has snowed a lot you will need a truck/4x4 to get there.

You do not need to be able to lead ice to climb here as you can walk around to set up a top rope, so make sure you are experienced and familiar with setting up a top rope anchor. If you're unsure of your skills hire a guide. A few guides in the area are: Canadian Alpine Guides and Banff Mountain Guides.

Check out GravSports-Ice for recent condition updates.
