Ice Climbing at Bear Spirit
Sawback, Alberta
Description
Added by Matt Ford
A unique ice climbing area that offers top rope accessible ice and mixed routes. Duration: 1 day. Elevation: ~300m. Distance: ~1.5km.
From the parking lot head East for about 200m, to find the trail that heads North. The trail follows the riverbed for about 45 minutes and in parts is washed out. A piece of flagging tape and a downed tree that is used as a bench marks the point where the trail gets tougher.
At this point you will need to put on your crampons and be ready to climb! A series of two short (2-3m) waterfalls start the final ascent to the crag. There are fixed ropes installed on both, and there are bolts available to set up a belay for less experienced climbers.
This area offers less crowds than some surrounding crags because it is a bit harder to get to, but it also allows you to play on steep ice and overhanging mixed routes without needing to lead climb. To get to the top walk to the right of the main curtain and the smaller side curtain. There is a steep, loose dirt/rock trail that accesses the top of the crag.
Bring a camera and scout around for unique angles, this crag provides plenty of opportunity for crazy shots!
