Kayak along the Shoreline of Tettegouche State Park

Silver Bay, Minnesota

Description

Added by Allison Herreid

View the scenic Palisade Head cliffs and kayak along Tettegouche’s iconic Shovel Point.

Begin your kayaking tour at the Northshore Mining Access (http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/maps/kayaking/lswt_map2.pdf) in Silver Bay, right after you pass the Northshore Mining facility. From here, begin paddling north towards Palisade head. The paddle from the launch to Palisade Head is just over 2 miles, and passes smaller cliffs and old fishing shacks. Right before you reach Palisade Head you will come to one sea cave. Once you get to Palisade Head, Shovel Point comes into view. The paddle to Shovel Point is about 2 more miles past Palisade Head. There are a few beaches along the way to stop for lunch or a break from paddling. If you continue past Shovel Point about a mile, there is another big sea cave near the beach in Crystal Bay.

REMINDER: CHECK THE FORECAST

Lake Superior waters are cold and weather conditions can change very rapidly. Always be alert for changing weather conditions. You may need to change your plans if conditions make it too risky to be on the lake. Make sure to wear a wetsuit or drysuit while kayaking.
