Kayak the Hudson River in Cold Spring
Cold Spring, New York
Description
Added by Kendall Poe
Affordable day trip from New York city and a good excuse to get outside!
North of New York City by 90 minutes lies the town of Cold Spring in the Hudson Valley. Cold Spring has a hometown quality with a Main Street, a firehouse, and art galleries of local artists. Despite its proximity to NYC, locals maintain a slower pace and enjoy many outdoor activities.
Just a short walk from the train station (if driving, the train station has parking and so does the launch site at Foundry Dock Park) you will find the rental company Hudson River Expeditions. They can properly outfit you with all gear. They also have lockers available to leave any personal items you may not want to take in the kayak with you.
Once at the park, you will launch into the Hudson River and must make your way to a railroad trestle at the beginning of Constitution Marsh. Only at low tide can you pass under this trestle, so plan accordingly. The rental company should give you the exact times of high tide to avoid being caught.
Alcoves of tall grass and reeds make up the marsh. It's fun to explore the alcoves to see which are dead ends and which lead to more marsh. If you feel so inclined, bring a compass for direction's sake (especially if you plan to have a bottle of wine or beer during your paddle).
