Kayaking at Point Doughty State Park
Eastsound, Washington
Description
Added by Jason Horstman
Amazing wildlife, especially at low tide. Scenic views of the surrounding islands and Mount Baker. The park is accessible only by human-powered water crafts.
The easiest way to explore this area is through Outer Island Excursions, which offers a 3-hour kayaking tour from Smuggler’s Villa Resort on Orcas Island (they also offer various tours of the surrounding islands).
The tour begins with a paddle down the North Shore of Orcas Island to Point Doughty State Park. During the paddle to the park, you will have a great opportunity to see harbor seals, bald eagles, starfish, jelly fish, and shore birds. You may also spot harbor porpoises feeding in the currents around the point.
Once at the park, you will have the opportunity to dock your kayak and walk up to the top of a ledge, which offers great views of the surrounding islands and Mt. Baker. There are also a few campsites on the island but they are pretty primitive. Here you can also enjoy a light snack before paddling back to the resort.
