A NOLS climbing course. Except gay-er! Build your rock climbing and leadership skills in a LGBTQ2IA+ affinity space. Head to Arizona’s Cochise Stronghold for nine days of immersive, experiential learning at a world-class climbing destination. Explore the area’s granite domes, jagged spires, and winding desert canyons. With the support of a community that celebrates queer identities, challenge yourself to meet new goals at the crag. This course takes place in the Dragoon Mountains, home of Cochise Stronghold and ancestral land of the Chiricahua Apache, Sobaipuri, Hohokam, and O’odham people. Deep canyons, rocky domes, tall spires, and bald summits dominate the landscape, creating a rock climber’s dream. You will be base-camping, which means camping in one location for the duration of the trip. You will set up tents and establish kitchens with two burner stoves, lanterns, and coolers of fresh food.  Base camping allows for extra luxuries that are not as realistic on a typical backcountry camping trip, such as extra sets of clothes, books, and camp chairs. You will be staying in established campsites and will drive in NOLS vehicles and/or hike to the climbing areas. Cochise Stronghold is a well-known climbing area, so you should expect to encounter other users who are not a part of NOLS during your trip.

Additional Information

NOLS Prime:

NOLS Prime Expeditions are immersive 1- to 3- week wilderness experiences designed exclusively for adults 23 and over. Our mission is to be educators, not guides. This means while learning how to climb, sail, backpack and more, you’re getting experience making decisions and mentorship from your instructors on managing risk with your group—with the goal that when your course is done you are ready to lead friends and family on your own wilderness trips! Vacations are great for a week or two away but wouldn’t you rather go beyond?

NOLS Southwest:

Discover the rich and varied landscapes of the U.S. Southwest on your next adventure. Arriving on campus, you’ll find yourself surrounded by an iconic desert landscape dotted with saguaros and ocotillo. But the Southwest has far more to offer than sand and cacti—the wilderness classrooms you’ll explore range from desert terrain to ponderosa pine forests and narrow river canyons. The technical skills you can learn here are just as varied: hiking, climbing, lightweight backpacking, whitewater canoeing, and caving. Backpack through the “sky islands,” isolated mountain ranges that rise up out of vast expanses of desert. Canoe the Rio Grande or climb granite crags at Cochise Stronghold, notable for its cultural and historical importance to the Apache as well as its climbing routes. The U.S. Southwest has a far-reaching and ongoing history of human presence, from the traces of ancient cultures you’ll see at Cliff Dwellings National Monument to the stories of indigenous communities, past and present, and water rights on the U.S./Mexico border. On semester courses, you’ll have the rare privilege of going caving, exploring underground in what feels like another world. And on every course, you’ll be captivated by the magic of the desert—the diversity and beauty of a landscape that you might’ve pictured as barren and empty.
