Expansive views to the Valles Caldera lead to a dense canyon connecting to an expansive trail network through the Sangre de Cristos mountains.
Pacheco Canyon Road / Forest Service Road #102 leads from the foothills of the Sangre de Cristos deep into the mountains, beginning with breathtaking views across to Valles Caldera (particularly at sunset) and ending deep in the mountains near Big Tesuque Campground after more than 2100' of elevation gain.
Along the road there are numerous trails which can be taken as a loop. Note that the road is often closed late into spring and early summer for snow and is often impassible.
There are also several trails which lead down into Pueblo Encantado and the Four Seasons Rancho Encantado.
To get there take Highway 84 for 12 miles north from Santa Fe to exit 172 / Tesuque Village Road. Stay right, and then go left onto county road 592 till it intersects with Pacheco Canyon Road after 3.5 miles.
