Mountain Bike the South Chilcotins
Squamish-Lillooet A, British Columbia
Description
Added by Emily Haggar
Lush valleys of wildflowers contrasted with dry arid mountains. Endless trails for hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding. Fantastic camping.
The South Chilcotin Mountains are a veritable mountain biking and hiking paradise. With hundreds of kilometers of dry, flowy mixed use trails and epic scenery, it would be easy to spend weeks exploring this area.
Many of the trails begin and end at Tyax Wilderness Resort, with the option to drive further up into the mountains to park or run bike shuttles. Tyax also offers float plane drops if you want to skip the climb up. The resort is located approximately 3hrs from Whistler or just over 5hrs from Vancouver.
The fields surrounding Taylor Cabin make for the ultimate subalpine campsite. Endless options for backcountry camping exist further down any of the connecting trails. Be sure to stop at Tyax for a trail map of the area.
To access the alpine, make a sharp right onto the dirt road above Tyax, veering left at the first 3 way junction (about 5km from Tyax). Continue on this road and park just before the waterbars start if you do not have a high clearance vehicle. 4WD vehicles can continue on up the road, staying left at the next major fork in the road to a higher parking area. If you've got some extreme 4x4 skills, keep on driving as far as you can, otherwise park here and hike or bike, following the wide trail up to Taylor Cabin (about 1.5hrs hike from the furthest possible driving point/washed out bridge).
From Taylor Cabin, you'll need your trail map to guide you. Fields of wildflowers, marmots and deep blue skies seem to go on forever, while the trails underfoot wind their way over creeks, valleys ands summits. Hiking the peaks of Harris Ridge or biking to Windy Pass and Spruce Lake are just a few of the awesome things to do here. Enjoy!
