On the Edge of Cotopaxi at Tambopaxi Eco-lodge

Halfway through a volunteer trip to Ecuador, we decided to get away for the weekend. We booked two nights at Tambopaxi, an eco-lodge within Cotopaxi National Park. Situated at over 12,000 feet Tambopaxi offers an unparalleled way to experience the national park. With incredible views of Cotopaxi and the neighboring volcanoes, Tambopaxi is a feast for the eyes.

We arrived in the afternoon and wandered through the fields surrounding the lodge, taking in the views and the horses grazing nearby. Nightfall brought out a view of a million stars hanging in the sky above Cotopaxi.

Originally built as a hut to allow climbers to acclimatize to the altitude, Tambopaxi has gained popularity among tourists thanks to its comfortable accommodations.  Offering a restaurant serving three meals, wifi, relaxed rooms with wood-burning stoves, and family activities, Tambopaxi makes it easy to relax and enjoy the view.

When we weren’t out wandering the hills surrounding Tambopaxi, we enjoyed hanging out in the communal dining room; playing cards, watching the hummingbirds swarm out the window, and staying warm by the wood stove.  The lodge had an incredible Andean charm which made you feel like you were visiting in someone’s home, rather than at a hotel.

We were lucky enough to score a room in the guest house, a separate cottage at the entrance of the property.  Our room was comfortable and warm, with thick blankets and a hot shower.  Our windows opened and faced just the right direction for watching the night sky.

In addition to your boots and a backpack full of layers because it gets chilly at altitude, you’ll want to pack a camera and extra batteries to capture all the beauty that Tambopaxi offers in Cotopaxi National Park.
