Paddle the Argo Cascades
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Description
Added by Travis Smith
Paddle through the Argo Cascades, a series of nine small rapids, rock chutes and pools through the heart of downtown Ann Arbor.
This adventure starts at Argo Park. Rent a kayak for $21 (including shuttle service back) or bring your own. Caution: parking can be limited on the busiest summer days, so be sure to check out the overflow lots and shuttles. Check the livery website for hours and additional parking information.
From Argo Park to Gallup Canoe & Livery, you will travel 3.7 river miles. This will take you 1.5 to 2 hours. At the beginning, you will encounter 9 man-made cascades that were recently built in 2012. These require a moderate degree of skill to maneuver in a kayak or you will end up wet. Each rapid chute is unique and exhilarating. From there, the river slows with a sandy bottom and beautiful scenery. Stop for a picnic or swim on an island or river bank and enjoy the day. Even though you are in the heart of Ann Arbor, much of the paddle is fairly secluded along public parks.
