Photograph Fall Colors Along Independence Pass and Twin Lakes, CO

While this is a more of a photography adventure and a fall drive to take through Colorado, there are also many areas to hike along the way. The drive can start from really anywhere in the general area. From the front range area of Colorado, head up I70 and get off toward Twin Lakes around Copper. The drive to Twin Lakes and on up over the pass is incredibly gorgeous from mid-September through the first week of October. Generally peak colors here are about September 20-30th, but you can still catch great color before or after by a few days. These photos were taken on September 17th, 2016.

You can also start this trip from the Aspen/Snowmass area. If you are in this area, be sure to check out the Maroon Bells in fall. They are one of the most photographed spots in Colorado. The drive between Twin Lakes and Aspen is about an hour but give it at least half a day or more if you are taking photos. You will want to stop about every five minutes. There are pullouts, picnic areas and viewing points along the drive. 

There are many activities you can add on to this adventure - check out the old mining town of Leadville, the ski town of Aspen and/or Snowmass and other scenic areas all within a couple hours of the pass.
