Photograph the Famous Stump by the Antelope Island Causeway
Syracuse, Utah
Description
Added by Michelle Olmstead
An interesting and somewhat famous dead tree stump just off the causeway heading to Antelope Island. This lone stump surrounded by the vast landscape of the Great Salt Lake makes a great photographic subject.
If you've ever visited Antelope Island State Park, there is no doubt you've seen the stump. This dead, bleached focal point with it's gnarled branches stands out in the middle of the vast landscape of the Great Salt Lake. It is located on the South side of the causeway, approximately two miles from the toll booth entrance.
This stump is a favorite subject of many local photographers. Each capture can look different, depending on the time of day, season, and water levels. I've always found great cloud formations here, no matter when I visit, and with views of the surrounding mountains, there are a variety of interesting compositions possible. Because of the fluctuating water levels of the Great Salt Lake, it is often possible to walk right up to the stump. Other times there will be water surrounding it, but it's been a few years since I've seen it completely surrounded, as levels of the lake continue to decline. In any season, you will need boots that you can get wet and muddy!

it’s easy to find—you’ll find it shortly after the guard gate on your way into the park, just off to the left of the causeway. it had rained the day before we went, so there was water around the stump—making for some cool pictures! there was no one else out when we went on a thursday afternoon.

It's $10 to get in but this was a great little adventure!

A pretty cool site to see! You will see it on the left hand side of the road right when you pass the gate/pay station to Antelope Island.

An altogether good vantage point to take photos of the Great Salt Lake - including the stump!
