Rock Climbing in Indian Creek
Monticello, Utah
Description
Added by Lindsay Daniels
Ultimate crack climbing destination. Beautiful desert landscape. Best time of year is spring and fall. Free camping in designated campgrounds or primitive dispersed camping on public land. Pack it out - Be responsible!
Just outside the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park and 40 miles south of Moab lies one of the greatest crack climbing destinations in the world. Indian Creek is home to world famous routes such as "Supercrack of the Desert" 5.10 "Way Rambo" 5.12- and "Incredible Hand Crack" 5.10c.
This place is not for the novice. Most of the climbing here is 5.10 and up. Because of the consistently sized cracks, several full racks of camalots are needed. Some climbs can use eight of the same sized cams, so know what cams you'll need before heading out. A great resource for beta on climbs is moutainproject.com (which is also an app that is currently free and can be used without the need of cell service) or "Indian Creek: A Climbing Guide" guidebook by David Bloom. Climbing with a large group is usually better due to the amount of gear needed. Sharing gear and meeting up with other climbers is common. There is no service in Indian Creek, so just remember how you lived pre-00's and you should be fine. Make use of the message boards found along Highway 211 and come prepared knowing the basics of wilderness first aid.
There are several campgrounds along the highway. I would suggest getting there in the daytime in order to find a good site. Weekends can be pretty busy, but there is plenty of space for everyone. Please camp responsibly and leave no trace. That means no poop in the desert! Fecal waste does not decompose in the desert due to the lack of bacteria in the soil. Pack it out or use the pit toilets along the highway.
Back at camp, make a campfire and talk about your climbing adventures of the day with friends.

Reviews
Very long drive out but so beautiful. Some of the approaches are steep. The rock is gorgeous. Gets crowded!! Fun to watch the climbers.
