Description

Added by Daniel Ernst

Enjoy brilliant views of Mount Aspiring National Park and Lake Wanaka on this well-marked track. The track type is grassy farmland turning into gravel.

This is a very strenuous uphill hike, with very few level stretches along the way, so make sure you have a good level of fitness, and wear sturdy shoes to avoid blisters, as the way back down will be hard on your knees and feet.

The track begins on private land, which is grassy with lots of sheep (and their poo) lying around, following a dirt road that turns into gravel once you've crossed into conservation land. Views get increasingly better along the way, and once you have reached the Stack Conservation Area, phenomenal ridge views will begin.

Follow the ridge up to the summit, at 1578 m (5,177 ft). If there is snow, it is advisable to follow the marked path beneath the ridge. Weather can change rapidly on the ridge, and there are sometimes strong gusts, so be prepared with warm clothes.

There are a few spots to pitch a tent up on the summit, but remember that camping is not officially permitted there (though not forbidden, either). Check with the local DOC office before camping.

If you're hiking in the spring, autumn, or winter, this hike is best done in the morning, while in the summer aim to hike in the afternoon.

Getting there: Drive 6 km (3.7 miles) from the Wanaka township, on the Mt Aspiring Road. The signed track can be found on the left side of the carpark.

This hike is definitely going to rest your legs but was well worth all the uphill! Definitely recommend - you get amazing views the whole way up!

Kicked my butt but it was worth the long wait to finally hike! Roys Peak is popular for a reason and also exhausting, but definitely a rewarding feeling when you reach the top. And when there are switchbacks, be aware of your knees on the way down!

Description is very accurate. All the leg strain and hard breathing for nearly 2.5 hours is well worth the views at the top. Did this hike in November and it was super windy the whole time. Going up we were sweating and at the peak we where shivering. Layers are key. Be prepared.

The photos say it all. The description is quite accurate. The stars (as seen) were just phenomenal. DO IT!

One of my favorite day hikes in New Zealand! Definitely worth the strenuous uphill hike. We did this hike in winter, so there was a good amount of snow on the trail especially as you got higher up, but still very doable!
