Run alongside frozen lakes and through old growth forests in this fun and easy snowshoe race.
The Noquemenon Trail Network in Marquette, MI puts on a series of races the last weekend of January every year featuring a 50k ski race, skijoring races, and fat tire bike races. Among the shortest of these is the Noquemenon Snowshoe 5k. If you are interested in getting a feel for snowshoe running or winter race culture, this is a great one to sign up for.
The race begins at the Forestville Park trailhead. The route is generally well marked, but it is worth taking a map with you as well since there are many intersecting trails. The trail is all downhill on the way out, so pace yourself for going uphill the whole way back. This is a casual race, so don't forget to enjoy the beautiful pine and birch forest and frozen lakes you are running by!
If you are not around the for the race weekend, it's no problem! The Forestville trails are open and groomed all winter long and are a great place to take a more leisurely snowshoe stroll.
