Description

Being the third highest peak in the Sawtooth range, Decker Peak offers a fun scramble and amazing views of the other Sawtooth and White Cloud peaks.

This can be a day trip or, if you want to take your time and relax after the climb, backpack in and camp at Hell Roaring Lake on the night before and after the climb.

Begin your journey at Hell Roaring Lake Trailhead. From Stanley, drive on ID-75 south for 12 miles, turn west at Decker Flat, and drive 5 miles on a rocky four-wheel-drive road. Make sure you have a car with high clearance.

From the trailhead, cross Hell Roaring Creek and hike 1.7 miles to Hell Roaring Lake. When the trail branches, head right and ascend up the ridge on the north side of Hell Roaring Lake. At the pass, stay left and head off the trail to the west. Travel along the ridgeline westward towards Decker Peak. Make your way slightly north and pass by three small lakes situated beneath the peak. This is a good place to take a snack break. Aim for Decker Saddle, the low point situated on the south ridge. Once you are on the saddle, boulder hop your way to the peak! Return the way you came, or head south towards Finger of Fate and follow the trail back to Hell Roaring Lake.
