Search for Madagascar's Largest Lemur

In the west of Madagascar, just a couple of hours drive from the capital Antananarivo, is a very special place. The home of Madagascar's largest species of lemur, the Indri Indri.

There is an area of national park here, however on our visit, our guide recommended a smaller locally run nature reserve where the entry fees directly benefited the local community, and the lemur population in the area was high.

With a local guide and a spotter who headed out into the forest ahead of us with a radio to look for the lemurs. It had started to rain, which meant our chances weren't as good, but a radio call after around 15 minutes lead to some good news, and soon we'd found a family of Indri sitting up in the trees.

The Indri Indri are the largest species of lemur, and one of the most endangered. They are only found in this area of Madagascar. So being able to see this this close is a real privilege.

The area is also filled with lush, dense rainforest, with all kinds of other endemic flora and fauna. Despite the rain, it was lush and colourful.
