Ski Jump at Suicide Bowl

If you are into extreme sports, ski jumping is definitely something you should try. Suicide Bowl (don't let the name put you off) outside of Marquette, MI is one of the oldest and most established ski jumping clubs in the country and a perfect place to either get started or hone your skills. 

Before you go: Contact the Ishpeming Ski Club to set up a time to go to Suicide Bowl. There isn't open jumping and the jumps can only be accessed through the club, but they are excited about introducing the sport to novices or working with more advanced jumpers. 

Suicide Bowl is in Negaunee along Suicide Bowl Road - the gate is easy to find. It has five jumps ranging from 15 feet to 90 feet, but if you are a newbie, you'll definitely be working with the smallest of these. The club has equipment to set you up with including your aerodynamic ski suit and special ski jumping skis. Just remember that according to Coach Gary Rasmussen, the most important skill you'll need to try the sport is just "fear management."  

If you are in the area and are not feeling up to ski jumping yourself, the club hosts tournaments throughout the winter that are public events. Definitely take the time to go watch the club's Olympic level jumpers in their element.
