Description

Added by Jason Hatfield

Escape the crowds of Breckenridge for a rustic winter getaway of skiing and mountain scenery. After a beautiful 6-mile trek, you'll arrive at a high mountain cabin built in 1882, where you can enjoy playing cards with friends, group meals, or reading a book next to the wood stove.

There are a couple routes to Section Hut on Boreas Pass, but the best adds trekking through the forest on Baker's Tank trail. Starting at 10,350' at the TH, look for a trail in the woods that starts climbing relatively quickly. Follow this for about 2.5 miles to the junction with the road and Baker's Tank, a historic water tank for the old rail line. From here you slog up the road for 3.5 miles before reaching Section Hut at 11,481', the views only get better the further you go.

The Section House Hut is actually an old railroad bunkhouse built in 1882 to house workers providing maintenance and snow clearing for the narrow-gauge rail. The building was restored from 1992-97 and joined the Summit Huts Association for winter use soon after. Next door sits Ken's Cabin built in the 1860s before the railroad. Section Hut comes stocked with padded mattresses, wood stoves & fuel, propane burners, all cookware and utensils, some games/puzzles/books, and sitting and eating areas. The hut sleeps 12 and the cabin sleeps 3.

Reviews

Spent New Years Eve and Day at the Section house, bringing in 2015, low key but lengthy approach, worth the while whether you're going to ski or just enjoy the views!

Im going up to kens cabin the 15th of December and I was wondering if snow shoes were really essential?
