Snowshoe Mt. Hood's White River

The White River West Sno-Park is a hub of winter activities at Mt. Hood. At 4200', this area is easily accessed directly off of Route 35. The large parking lot fills up quickly on snowy weekends so arrive early to get a spot and make sure that you have an Oregon Sno-Park Permit*.

The White River runs along the east side of the parking lot. Head to the North side to access the trails. The parking lot and lower portion of the trails may seem inundated with families because this is a popular sledding area, but you will quickly pass beyond this. While there are usually some established trails you have an opportunity to blaze your own. Along the left you can ascend a steep incline into a wooded area. This provides the best views of Mt. Hood and a chance to head up to the Pacific Crest Trail. Staying to the right, you can follow along the White River. Depending on the snow pack you may not be able to follow this route as far as the left side, so be prepared to find a new route if needed.

Aside from the epic views of Mt. Hood, one of the best things about this area is that it is wide open, even in the trees. So you can find your own routes without worrying about getting lost as you have handlebars on either side of you with a ridge line and the White River.

Driving Notes: Oregon requires that drivers either have traction tires or carry chains for most of the winter on Rt 26 and Rt 35. The Sno-Park parking lot is directly off Rt 35 and most cars would not have issues getting there if the roads are plowed.

*Stop on your way in to pick up your Sno-Park permit. These currently cost $4 for a day pass or $25 for an annual pass and are sold in most gas stations, convenience stores, and sporting good shops along the way to Mt. Hood. If you are coming from out of state, Oregon honors Sno-Park permits from California and Idaho.
