Description

Added by Jason Hatfield

Powder-filled backcountry trails right off the highway heading to Steamboat Springs.

Rabbit Ears Pass outside of Steamboat Springs is packed with winter nordic trails. Most trails are marked and accommodate cross-country skiing or snowshoeing; to be courteous to other users keep snowshoes and dogs off ski tracks. Depending on how much recent snow there has been, the trails can be packed snow or completely fresh.

The most popular trail is the West Summit Loop 1A, located 13 miles east of Steamboat on Highway 40. From the trailhead on the north side of the road, a 3.7-mile loop extends into the forest with views of Yampa Valley and the Flat Tops.

Reviews

Very accessible and very doable. An awesome view of the Flattops rewards a fairly long but steady climb at about mile 1 if your going counterclockwise (a much gentler two-hump climb beginning also at about mile 1 if you’re traveling clockwise).
